Typing skills

topic posted Mon, March 24, 2008 - 5:44 PM by  Dragonfly
Can anyone here shed light on the typing skills necessary in dispatch?

I'm currently typing between 40 and 70wpm, depending on the text, and am working on drills to improve my skills.

Is U/L case used a lot, or is all caps, or all l/c acceptable? I can of course type text faster when not shifting back and forth.

Also keyboard type: are standard keyboards the norm, or are ergonomic or other specialty keyboards in use? (I'm practicing on a standard keyboard)

Thanks,
D

As far as keyboard types, that's going to depend on budgets. However, being a typing intensive career, I imagine ergonomic keyboards are available in most dispatch centers.

40-70wpm is common and quite well. Accuracy helps. If you want an idea of how many (not necessarily all) dispatch centers enter their info, take a look at the CAD logs from CHP.

Choose an area, click on an incident. Notice the widespread use of acronyms and abbreviations for just about everything.

    Here's a sample of a non-injury accident...

      Thanks Greg

This site does help. Also the glossary.

Accuracy would pretty much be essential when lives are at risk. If someone erroneously sends the SWAT team or the ambulance to the wrong house, I wouldn't want it to be on my watch.
